Do you know Jens Jensen ? If Olmsted was considered the father of American landscape architecture then the New York Times aptly named Jensen the “Dean” of American landscape architecture. We talk today about his impact in the Midwest, developing and promoting the “Prairie” style of landscaping. timer analogico
Jensen looked to the natural landscape and used it to create his own unique plans. His work preserved spaces with their original flora and fauna, and he used native, indigenous species to bring the natural landscape back into urban areas where it was lost. As a design scheme his vision was considered quite different from a manicured landscape, and although distinct, his muse was the original landscape that was present long before any of us were.
Jensen incorporated many aspects of “prairie country” into his designs, not just his plant choices. He used nature to educate himself not only on plants but also on how the prairie worked. An example is his dramatic work on the Garfield Park Conservatory . A story from the Jens Jensen Legacy Project tells us, in Jensen’s own words, when building a waterfall for one of the displays he directed the construction to bring about a gentle flow of water, gracefully trailing down over rocks because this is how water would travel through a natural prairie.
He appreciated the presence of stone in many of his designs, the council ring being his trademark. He used stone to create walls that appeared to belong, seat walls that seemed to rise naturally from the ground, and paths and steps that felt they were part of the landscape. Notice the sun lit path in the picture below right, meandering around the park, again as if it was there from the beginning. These images are from a lesser-known site, Historic Mahoney timer analogico Park in Kenilworth, Il, designed by Jensen in 1930 and opened to the public in 1933.
Along with his vision to create he was also dedicated to conservation. His early work paved the road toward timer analogico what we know now as the Forest Preserves of Cook County . His efforts timer analogico and dedication to our landscapes allow us to benefit. This tree for example is a testament Jensen’s continued drive to preserve the heritage of the landscape and we are graced with its grandeur today. Join us again next time for more inspiration and passion, here, in the garden.
